In Goa, Jaydev Mody rules; gets one more casino from BJP

After promising voters to wipe out casinos from Goa, the Bharatiya Janata Party government has allotted one more casino to Jaydev Mody-owned Delta Corp, this time ‘on-shore’ at his Deltin Suites resort in Goa.
The national business media is full of news reports about Delta Corp jumping 6 per cent up in the share market after Asia’s biggest casino operator announced the fourth casino in Goa.
As per the reports, Delta has announced a casino licence being granted at Deltin Suites, a five star resort at Nerul, across river Mandovi from Panaji, with 106 rooms.
The new casino offers variety of casino games, including blackjack, baccarat and roulette.
Mody’s Delta Corp now owns four casinos, including three offshore vessels and three resorts, including stakes in Sunder Advani’s Ramada Hotels.
The other two offshore casinos are owned by the Pride Group.
Delta dominates Goa’s floating casino market, which includes Asia’s largest live offshore casino – Deltin Royale as well as Deltin Jaqk, comparatively a smaller casino vessel.
Deltin Caravela, the smallest among all and Goa’s first casino vessel started in 2001 with 200 gaming positions, is presently under renovation.
Deltin took over the oldest vessel from Advani group, to float once again in the river possibly this season with a new look after 15 years.
While BJP’s then chief minister Manohar Parrikar declared that no more casino licences would be granted, Deltin Royale came in August 2013 during his regime with triple the capacity of any existing casino vessel in Goa.
Covering 40,000 sq ft of area, Asia’s biggest casino vessel has four operational decks with 1500 live gaming positions with 116 tables, 40 slot machines, India’s largest poker room and four gaming suites for ‘VVIPs and VIPs’.
Deltin Jaqk, started in 2008 during Digambar Kamat’s Congress regime, has a gaming area of 11,000 sq ft with 500 gaming positions, 47 live gaming tables and 30 slot machines.
Mody’s group also owns two resorts in Goa – Deltin Palms and Deltin Suites, besides a hotel-cum-casino in Daman.
He also has 35 per cent stakes in Sunder Advani’s Ramada Caravela, who brought first offshore live casino of India, in Goa, in 2001, thanks to the then Congress regime.
