Goa institutes Veerjyoti awards for brave girls fighting harassment

Goa government has instituted ‘Veerjyoti Puraskar’, awards for two women, who have shown exceptional bravery or courage in fighting atrocities, violence or harassment against women.

First such two awards of 2016 would be conferred on 26 January, Republic Day, this year.

The award aims to encourage and motivate women to seek their rightful status, remove gender asymmetries and attitudes and develop respect and dignity for women and girls in the society.

Following is the criteria for this award, as specified by the Department of Women and Child Development.

“Any woman or girl, who has shown exceptional bravery and courage, especially in adverse circumstance against any type of atrocities, violence and /or harassment against her or against any other woman or girl at home, in the workplace and everywhere in the public domain and has fought for their respect and dignity in society in the State of Goa.”

The applicant could be any woman or girl from any walk of life, whether a housewife, domestic servant, child in homes/Institutions, professional, social worker etc. and should be a resident of Goa for the last 5 years as on 1st  January 01 of the respective year.

 

She should not have received any other award for the same act during the year, states a press release.

The award is restricted to only two female members of the society Goa and will comprise of a scroll/citation and cash prize of Rs. 20,000 each.

The Department of Women and Child Development will receive application either as a soft copy on CD in Word format or a hard print in the prescribed format available at the Directorate.

The application needs to be submitted before 20th December this year for the 2016 awards at the office of the Directorate of Women & Child Development, Old Educational Building, 2nd Floor, 18th June Road, Panaji, Goa.

Applications received after the due date will not be considered for the award, states the press note.
