Police abusing power: Church on Fr Bismarque protest
GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 22 November 2015 23:20 IST

The Church-run Council for Social Justice and Peace has alleged that Goa police abused power while dealing with peaceful demonstrators demanding proper probe into the death of Fr Bismarque Dias.
A press note issued in this regard by CSJP executive secretary Fr Savio Fernandes stated as follows:
In view of the incident which has taken place on 21 November in Panaji during the protest to demand a thorough probe with regard to the death of Fr Bismarque Dias, the CSJP expresses serious concern over the excessive use of force by police men and women towards innocent citizens.
In maintaining law and order, the police should use utmost discretion and not harass people arbitrarily. Police action is meant to disperse agitators who pose threat to law and order.
However the forceful detention of bystanders or commuters from the ferry boat assuming them to be protesters without any provocation is abuse of power. Moreover, arresting those who were peacefully dispersing from the scene is also unjustifiable.
The Council calls on the police to respect the Constitutional Rights of the people to assemble and protest peacefully and also to exercise judicious discernment in action while maintaining law and order.
