We are closely following Fr Bismarque death probe: Church

Church of Goa has clarified that it has been following up the case of the death of Fr Bismarque Dias closely, without publicising its efforts.
While the whole state and especially the Christian community of Goa is up in arms over the death of priest-turned-activist Fr Bismarque, priests within the clergy had asked why the Church is silent on the issue.
“Right from day one, the Church Authorities in Goa, through the Council for Social Justice and Peace and the Priests working in the parish of St Estevam, have been expressing their solidarity with his family in this painful situation”, stated a press note issued by Fr Olavo Caido, director of Goa’s Diocesan Centre for Social Communications Media.
He also stated that the Church authorities have been closely following the case of his death, without publicizing their efforts, to see that a proper investigation is carried out by the relevant authorities, so that the truth of the matter may be brought to light.
Fr Michael Fernandes, one of the local priests, had even gone to the extent of alleging that the Church was indirectly responsible for his death by not protecting him while he was fighting the bigwigs involved in illegalities.
But Church has its own opinion on this issue, which was also clarified in the press note:
“In the light of some confusing reports and misleading statements appearing in some sections of the media, it seems opportune to clarify that since June 2010, Fr. Bismarque, of his own accord, had left the exercise of his priesthood and dedicated himself to various social causes affecting Goa”, stated the press note.
As a former member of the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament, with its Provincial Headquarters in Mumbai, Fr. Bismarque was under the direct jurisdiction of his Provincial Superior, added Fr Caido.
The Archdiocese of Goa and the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament (India) has also regretted the untimely and tragic death of Fr. Bismarque Dias.
