No funeral until police act against Fr Bismarque’s suspected 'killers’

GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 10 November 2015 22:42 IST

Relatives of deceased Fr Bismarque Dias, St Estevam villagers and social activists have today announced that they will not conduct his funeral unless Goa government and police act against the culprits responsible for his tragic death.

Hundreds of supporters and social activists, earlier on Monday, gathered in St Estevam village of Fr Bismarque, demanding speedy probe into his tragic and shocking death, leaving behind lots of suspicion.

In a letter submitted to Director General of Police, Fr Bismarque’s brother Mario Dias has also demanded that the probe be transferred to the CID Crime Branch, while expressing dissatisfaction about the ongoing police investigations by Old Goa police.

“The Old Goa police have already made up their mind about the cause of his death and have not even bothered to record statements of family members of Fr Bismarque”, he stated in the letter.

According to Dias, the Old Goa police have not pursued many leads and circumstantial evidences leading to his unnatural death.

Dias also pointed out how the Old Goa police had not bothered to take action against the written complaints filed by his activist brother stating that he had been receiving threats to his life.

“Fr Bismarque was an uncompromising activist, who had challenged many powerful forces in his campaign against environmental destruction and land grabbing,” stated Dias.

They have decided not to collect his dead body until they are satisfied that Goa police and the government are serious about conducting comprehensive and fruitful investigation into the shocking death of Fr Bismarque.

PUBLIC MEETING

Earlier, a public meeting held yesterday to pay tributes to Fr Bismarque, demanded that the probe be handed over to a specially designated police officer.

Sabina Martins, who organised the meeting on behalf of Goa Bachao Abhiyan, disclosed that Dr Edmundo Rodrigues, who conducted the second post-mortem of Fr Bismarque, had told her that nothing could be ruled out and police need to investigate further.

Though the second autopsy has ruled out any pre-death injuries on the body of Fr Bismarque, the team of forensic experts led by Dr Rodrigues have not specified the cause of his death.

The first autopsy report had stated that Fr Bismarque died due to drowning while the second report states that the cause of death would be known only after getting the report of viscera and chemical analysis.

The meeting held yesterday also announced that some villagers would accompany the police team to CFSL laboratory in Hyderabad and will wait there until the report of viscera and chemical analysis gets ready.

The meeting was addressed by local parish priest Fr Eusico as well as social activists including Fr Eremito Rebello of Goans for Dabolim Only, Zarina D’Cunha of Village Groups of Goa, Prakash Bandodkar of Pilern Citizens, Ramesh Gawas, Adv Swati Kerkar, Aires Rodrigues, Siddharth Karapurkar, Judith Almeida, Prajal Sakhardande, Madhu Gaonkar and German D’Mello.

A message to the killer / s. You may have bribed the burecrates of Goa to close this case by destroying every evidence. But remember one thing. You can't bribe God to evade his punishment and the curse you invited on you and your loved ones. One guarantee I can give every human has death and with your money power you won't be able to evade death. So be prepared for the rewards of your deeds.
