Rajan turns tables in Cuncolim, rises from 2 to 8 to form BJP council

GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 27 October 2015 21:21 IST

Tables turned against John Monteiro, who had sprung up as a major winner in Cuncolim, with his elected councillors joining hands with BJP legislator Rajan Naik.

The poor picture of the BJP in the morning with mere 2 candidates getting elected changed dramatically by evening.

All the 6 elected candidates, claimed to have been supported by Monteiro, joined the ruling party camp.

“They had already assured me to come and join our party camp after getting elected”, Rajan Naik, the BJP MLA told goanews.com.

He however admitted that former Congress MLA Joaquim Alemao had managed to get four councillors elected from the Congress camp.

In the last Assembly election, Monteiro had split Alemao’s votes, to make Naik win the traditional Congress seat for the BJP.

Monteiro had polled 4811 votes while Alemao got 6355; as a result Naik got elected the BJP MLA by polling 7628 votes.

Naik, who was busy discussing with his 8 elected candidates and supporters, said they are still deliberating upon who should be the chairperson.

The municipality being reserved for a lady chairperson, most of them are presently in favour of Polita Carneiro, the former councillor.

“She has stood by us and deserves the post of a chairperson”, said Naik, adding that the actual picture would be clear by tomorrow.
