By winning majority 6 seats, John Monteiro has posed a serious threat before Joaquim Alemao of Congress as well as BJP MLA Rajan Naik in Cuncolim.
The sitting MLA could win only 2 seats in the Cuncolim municipal election.
Monteiro, who had split Alemao’s votes in the last Assembly election, emerged victorious in the civic poll.
His panel won 6 seats while Alemao’s panel won only 4 seats.
The BJP could not cross 2 seats in 12-member municipal council.
Cuncolim is the only seat the BJP could win in the last Assembly election held in 2017.
Alemao family had lost all four seats they were contesting in the last Assembly poll, including Cuncolim, which Joaquim was holding as the minister.
After remaining away from the constituency for over three years, Joaquim had entered Cuncolim to strike back.
However, Monteiro-backed candidates have made his path difficult in the next Assembly election.
Naik, on the other hand, is in a sorry state.
