Mickky released from jail 44 days in advance, for 'good behaviour'

Former minister and Nuvem MLA Mickky Pacheco is finally released from Sada jail today, 44 days in advance, serving his six-month sentence for assaulting a government official.

He was otherwise completing his jail term by November end.

Elvis Gomes, Inspector General of Prisons, said he is released in advance, earning remission of sentence for good behaviour and the work he has put in.

He was sentenced a jail term for his ‘bad behaviour’ of assaulting a junior engineer of electricity department in 2006.

In the jail, Mickky was working in cooking and baking section.

Claiming it to be a routine exercise, Gomes said there are seven more prisoners, who have earned remission but not released because their jail sentence is longer.

Out of 180-day jail sentence, Mickky thus spent total 136 days in the jail.

Mickky had resigned on 2 April as the minister from the existing BJP government after the Supreme Court had upheld his sentence on 30 March this year.

However, a notice of proclamation was issued against him since the former minister was absconding since then and the JMFC had even issued a search warrant for him.

He had finally surrendered on 2 June and was sent to Sada sub-jail.

Mickky was convicted and sentenced to six-month jail by lower court in 2011, which he challenged but failed to get relief in the high court for the offence he had committed in 2006.

He challenged the high court order of 17 July last year in the Supreme Court, which upheld the high court order.

The BJP governemnt in the meanwhile had made attempts to get him pardoned, but Governor Mridula Sinha had declined to pardon him.

Besides being the MLA from Nuvem, Mickky is also the leader of Goa Vikas Party, whose both the MLAs, including Benaulim MLA Caitu Silva, are supporting the BJP government right from 2012.

However, he was made the minister only after the vacancy was created following resignation of Manohar Parrikar as the chief minister on 8 November last year.

Though Mickky is now out, his vacancy in the cabinet is already being filled by Rajendra Arlekar on 1 October.
