Make Mauvin the deputy speaker, suggests Wagh
GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 04 October 2015 20:58 IST

St Andre MLA Vishnu Wagh has suggested that Congress MLA Mauvin Godinho be made the deputy speaker.
His first choice for the post however is Rajan Naik, his party colleague from Cuncolim, who has been removed from the chairmanship of South Goa PDA, to accommodate Godinho.
Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar has already said that he actually has Wagh for the post in his mind.
In an elaborate article written for Navprabha, a Marathi daily, Wagh however has once again denied that the post was offered to him.
The deputy speaker’s post will fall vacant once Anant Shet will be elevated to the speaker’s post.
Rajendra Arlekar, who was the speaker, has been inducted in the cabinet by Parsekar on 1 October.
Since all the two-time legislators of Bharatiya Janata Party have now been accommodated either as the minister or the speaker, Wagh feels his party should now apply the criteria of age.
“Rajan-bhai Naik is the eldest among the one-time MLAs. He should be thus given the post of deputy speaker”, Wagh suggests.
In case he refuses, says the St Andre MLA, Godinho should be given the post.
“Though physically he is not the BJP legislator, psychologically Mauvin is already in the BJP. Our Christian brothers would be happy if he is given a red bacon car”, suggests Wagh.
Having a mild and non-confrontationist attitude, Wagh has also raised doubts about how effective Shet would be as the speaker.
He also wonders if Shet is happy with the elevation.
He has all the praises for Arlekar in the speaker’s chair and also feels confident that he would equally perform well as the minister.
But Wagh wonders why name of the legislator for the deputy speaker’s post was not announced by defence minister Manohar Parrikar, who announced at the dinner meeting Arlekar as the new minister and Shet as the speaker.
“Either the party has not finalised the name or the party does not feel that the post of deputy speaker attains any importance”, Wagh states in his article.
According to Wagh, elevating Shet as the speaker and electing new speaker will not happen at least for the next three weeks since Governor Mridula Sinha is on a foreign tour.
The governor needs to convene special session of the Assembly to elect the speaker and the deputy speaker.
Till then, Shet will be the acting speaker.
