Independent students sweep PGSU election, ABVP defeated

GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 11 September 2015 23:29 IST

Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad of Sangh Parivar faced a humiliating defeat at Goa University’s Post Graduate Students’ Union (PGSU) election, with 14 independents out of 20 sweeping the poll.

Six of these independents were already elected unopposed yesterday.

The ABVP however managed to win six seats.

The Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has actually swept the state-level polls of Goa University Students’ Council held on 24 August.

But the BJYM had faced similar defeat at Goa University level, even in GUSC elections, winning only one seat. The rest five were won by the independents.

The trend of fighting election with no political backing has started in the Goa University campus since last year.

With the force of independent-minded students entering the fray at Goa University level, the Congress-backed NSUI is not even contesting post-graduate students’ elections.

The independent students are supported by two non-political students’ bodies – Voice of Students and Goa Rakhan Manch.

The ‘independent’ winners are as follows:

Raj Malik, Swapnesh Gaonkar, Julius Mendes, Gaargi Bhat, Sankalp Mahale, Usman Khan, Digvesh Naik, Ambika Dias, Shrutika Borkar, Adarsh Fatarpekar, Edeana Fernandes, Abhishek Naik, Bhalchandra Natekar and Ashutosh Natekar.

The ABVP winners are:

Sanyog Gawas, Pratik Salgaonkar, Preethi Podval and Wazid Shah. (Sorry, two more names are not available right now.)

What do these elected folks do after the election? You never hear them comment or say anything on education or other matters on interest to youth? I remember the PSU and other student bodies of the 70s and 80s. That was a real student force, with ideals and principles. Congresswaaals got scared and ran away from the field I guess.
