Bhandari 61% among OBC, Bardez-Ponda strongest

Bhandari community dominates from among the 19 communities of the Other Backward Classes, with a population of 2.34 lakh from among total 3.83 lakh OBC population in a 14.6 lakh strong Goa.
The findings of the survey conducted by the Goa State Commission for Backward Classes indicate that Bhandari represents 61 per cent of OBC.
The OBC with 19 communities however consist of 26.26 per cent of Goan population.
The OBC again dominates North Goa, with 71 per cent population, which comes to around 2.72 lakh from among the total OBC of Goa.
The South Goa has only 29 per cent of OBC.
The OBCs are also predominant among the Hindus - 84 per cent – while around 7 per cent are Christian OBCs.
It is not mentioned in the survey highlights circulated by the government, which religion the rest 9 per cent belongs to.
The Christian OBC communities mentioned in the survey are Dhobi, Kharvi, Kumbhar, Barber and Mahar.
The Hindu OBCs are Bhandari, Kharvi, Dhangar, Dhobi, Nhavi, Koli, Nathjogi, Gosavi, Kumbhar, Teli, Shimpi, Kalaikar, Pagi/Gabit, Satarkar, Bhandari Naik, Thakar and Vishwakarma/Chari/Mest.
The survey has counted total 68,363 OBC families, with a population of 3,83,094 persons.
Bardez is the strongest taluka with OBC population of 18 per cent – 70,451. Equally strong taluka next to it Ponda, having 16 per cent OBC – a population of 62,348.
The taluka having lowest number of OBCs is Sattari – only 9981.
The break-up of only six communities from among 19 communities has been made public till now, as follows:
