Goa police has moved the local court in Panaji, requesting deposition of the victim girl in a nationally debated rape case involving Tehelka editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal.

Though the team of crime branch of Goa police has recorded statements of Tehelka staffers by going to Delhi, the victim girl’s statement needs to be recorded before the Judicial Magistrate First Class.

The new amendment to the Criminal Procedure Code has made it mandatory to record the victim’s statement in the court (in-camera).

Highly placed sources at the police headquarters disclosed to goanews.com that an application in this regard has already been moved to the Panaji JMFC since the FIR has been filed in Panaji, at the Crime Branch.

Tejpal, in the FIR, has been charged of rape and outraging modesty of his junior colleague two weeks ago at Grand Hyatt at Bambolim, during THiNK Fest, organised by Tehelka news magazine.

The victim girl, though working in Delhi, is presently in Mumbai.

If necessary, said sources, the deposition could also be shifted to Mumbai.

According to sources, her statement would be recorded this week as it is the most important evidence for the police to move ahead with its investigations.

The police had filed the FIR suo motto, based on media reports and the email written by the victim girl to Tehelka managing editor Shoma Chaudhury.

The police team, while in Delhi, has already seized laptops of the victim girl as well as accused Tejpal from Tehelka office, to get authenticated version of the email.

In addition, the team has also recorded statements of Chaudhury as well as three staffers, whom the victim girl had narrated the incidents of sexual attack on both the days.

Goa DIG O P Mishra, when asked, however refused to divulge any information with regard to the investigation.

“The investigation will follow the normal procedure laid down by law”, he said.

Deposition of the victim girl is mandatory as per this procedure.
