Cong demands Parrikar's head & judicial probe into Nigerian episode

GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 01 November 2013 21:32 IST

The opposition Congress has demanded a judicial probe into the incident of ruckus on the streets by Nigerians and resignation of chief minister for his failure in handling the law and order situation.

“Such an incident never occurred during Congress regime and it is a clear indication of political interference in police department”, claimed Congress spokesman and legislator Aleixo Reginald Lourenco.

The National Highway at Porvorim junction was blocked for over three to four hours yesterday as police could not handle the situation with alertness when a group of hefty Nigerians blocked the road.

The Nigerians had reacted violently after one of their colleagues was found murdered in Parra village as a result a gang war between drug peddling gangs.

“This is a clear indication of total failure of law and order in Goa and Parrikar should resign as the home minister, taking its moral responsibility”, said Lourenco.

Contrary to this, Parrikar had yesterday blamed the erstwhile Congress regime where the culture of police-drug trade nexus had set in.

Lourenco, at a press conference today, demanded a thorough judicial probe into the incident of a murder of Nigerian as well as the ruckus created by violent Nigerians on the road.

The road blockade of Porvorim was nothing but an indication that foreigners like Nigerians involved in drug trade are not at all scared of Goa police any more, he said.

A judicial probe is required since situation went out of hands due to political interference, he alleged.

The Congress leader also demanded that all the Nigerians and other foreigners living in Goa illegally be deported immediately.

“It is an eye opener for all the Goans that pampering such elements results into what we witnessed at Porvorim”, said Lourenco.

Meanwhile, Goa Youth Congress president Valanka Alemao also echoed a similar demand of judicial probe and chief minister’s resignation, in a separate press conference.
