Cong opposes its own 'corrupt' golf course project

GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 05 June 2013 14:46 IST

The opposition Congress is upset because the BJP government is taking ahead the land grabbing project mooted during the Congress regime for a golf course at Terekhol in Pernem.

According to Congress spokesman Aleixo Reginald Lourenco, the BJP should not take ahead the project if its boasts of zero tolerance to corruption.

While indirectly admitting that corruption was involved in promoting the project during the Congress regime, he alleges that the BJP is also promoting it because the same company also has bought land around proposed Mopa air port.

“I don’t bother who started it. Take action against them”, demands the Curtorim MLA.

Leading Hotels Pvt Ltd, owned by Shiv Jathia, had acquired 9.90 lakh sq mts of land at Terekhol during Congress regime for a golf course and a resort.

Lourenco now complains that the land was grabbed by illegally evicting the tenants of the area.

According to him, the town and country planning board revised and approved the project at 144th meeting held on 24 December last year.

The documents supplied by Lourenco indicate that the TCB Board has allowed the company to utilize and construct only in the area of 49,800 sq mts of land, against 9.90 lakh sq mts of land it owns.

This comes to allowing utilizing only five per cent of the land, for eco-tourism resort, as approved by the State Level Committee of the Regional Plan 2021.

While supporting the tenants who were evicted from the land during the Congress regime, the Congress spokesman demanded that the whole project should be scrapped.

“What is the use of demanding Special Status for Goa when the government on the other hand is selling land to the outsiders”, asked Lourenco at a press conference today.

He also alleged that local MLA and health minister Laxmikant Parsekar is promoting a bridge at Terekhol, for the benefit of the golf course and not the local people. is now on Telegram & also Youtube. Kindly subscribe for free & remain updated.

Second thought:

So, Goa will have TWO GOLF COURSES! One at Terekhol in Pernem and second at Vanxim, in Divar. Wow!!

The second golf course at Divar has much touching story than land grabbing project mooted during the Congress regime at Terekhol.

The touching story of second golf at Vanxim in Divar goes as follows:

The Archdiocese of Goa, through the council for Social justice & peace headed by Fr. Maverick Fernandes, has been agitating against the mega housing projects in the state.

But the Archdiocese of Goa has come under a cloud following the sale of one of the river islands owned by the Archdiocese of Goa to a resort developer. Villagers residing at Vanxim (Ilhas de Capao), a small picturesque island located in the Mandovi River, have alleged that the Church and the administration colluded to strip them of their land.

People and villagers of the Island say that the Archdiocese of Goa headed by the Archbishop, Rev Felipe Neri Ferrao, has directly and indirectly helped to promote mega housing project in Vaxim, Divar. An area of almost 5 lakhs sq. mt. land of Vanxim, Divar belonging to the Santa Monica convent has been sold to Mahendra Gaunekar for sum of Rs. 55,04,150. Who has, in turn, sold it to a Banglore based developer named Ozone Leisure and Resort Pvt. Ltd. And its associates for Rs. 30 Crore and 16.7 percent share of the first phase of the proposed mega development projects. THE REMAINING 83.3 % of the over 4,00,000 sq mts property WILL BE DEVELOPED INTO A GOLF COURSE. In fact Mahendra Gaunekar, in the joint development agreement, has undertaken to have the whole Vanxim Island declared as a settlement zone.

The sale deed shows that over 3 lakhs sq. mts is shown as paddy fields in the survey records. The sale deed also states that no cultivation was done for several years and that the said area had remained fallow and the soil has become uncultivable and the competent authorities have issued certificates to this effect. The actual payments or profit that Mahendra Gaunekar will make on the deal is probably 10 times the amount or closer to Rs. 300 crore approximately.

All these years, nobody bothered about the people of Terekhol.

Now that the golf course is built against the wishes of the local people, many in the ruling party are indeed trying the company and not the local people, by constructing the bridge.

BJP/MGP are helping the developers in Terekhol but trying to show to the people of Goa that the proposed bridge is for the benefit of the local people.

The Congress is responsible for spoiling the Terekhol and has no right to blame the BJP.

Both are two sides of the same coin, interested in helping the company which is 'developing' the place - if 'development' is the right word for this.

Motive of constructing the bridge is crystal clear.

Ever since BJP came to power with sweeping majority, opposition party’s spokespersons i.e. congress party spokespersons (Lourenco & Sudip) does not know what to speak but prefers to speak anything, everything and at all the times! To this many Goans say, “Aree tanka bhut bada zalya…dekhun te toshe uloytat ani wagtat”.

Forgetting Sudip for time being, my question goes to Lourenco: What was Lourenco doing when the land was being acquired during congress regime for developing golf course at Terekhol in Pernem? Did he initiate any action as an elected MLA then and now? Have you forgotten your responsibilities as opposition party MLA?

My expectation is: Lourenco being an elected MLA, spokesperson of opposition party, must act as is required! He must not forget that there are plenty avenues open for him to initiate actions against proposed golf course! And without exploiting those avenues he must not make irresponsible and nonsensical statements trying to equate ‘zero tolerance’ with ‘golf club.’ OR is he trying to tell Goans that zero tolerance equals to zero development!!
