One prisoner died and over 10 have been admitted to hospital after the prisoners had food last night at Aguada jail as well as the Mapusa judicial lock up.
It is still not ascertained whether the prisoners fell ill due to food or water contamination.
Mahadev Gaonkar, serving life imprisonment in a murder case since September 2011, died in the incident.
While prisoners having acute stomach pain have been shifted to Goa Medical College hospital, others have been treated at Candolim health centre.
The information reveals that nine prisoners in Mapusa lock up fell sick after having food while others are from Aguada.
Aguada jail has 116 prisoners while the Mapusa judicial lock up has 80 inmates.
The Aguada prisoners cook the food and supply also to the Mapusa lock up.
Inspector General of Prisons Mihir Vardhan said he is still taking stock of the situation and the health officials are trying to ascertain the cause of it.
They have believed to have taken samples of the food as well as water and the reports are awaited.
