GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 30 May 2013 19:11 IST
Working class of Goa today celebrated Goa Statehood Day by courting arrest in Panaji in protest of anti-labour policies of the state government.
Hundreds of workers staged a Jail Bharo today morning at Kranti Circle near the bus stand.
After a brief public meeting, the workers blocked the main road near the Kadamba bus stand.
Panaji police, led by the deputy collector, immediately pushed them in the pre-arranged buses and detained them at Anjuna police station.
They were later released.
Earlier, the meeting was addressed by AITUC president Prasanna Uttagi, general secretary Christopher Fonseca, deputy general secretary Raju Mangeshkar and secretary Suhas Naik.
The speaker highlighted the general anti-labour policies of the state government and especially the pro-management role it has played in Zuari Agro Chemicals Ltd retrenching the contract workers.
