More divisions in Std XI, if no admission

Goa government is planning to allow opening of more divisions as well as to increase the number of students in one division, in order to accommodate more number of students seeking admission for Std XI.

Chief minister Manohar Parrikar has appealed to the students as well as parents not to panic since admissions are full.

The situation has arisen due to good SSC result this year, around 85 per cent, compared to 73 per cent last year.

In terms of number, 16727 students passed out this year while it was hardly 10,843 last year.

In addition, there are almost 1444 students, who got ATKT, increasing the number to 18,171.

According to Parrikar, the occupancy last year was around 86 per cent in 68 private schools and nine government schools, in Std XI.

While he expects to fill the gap of 14 per cent, around 10 per cent students or around 1500 students may still face the problem of not getting admission.

“I am calculating this after considering that around 3000 students opt for ITI or Polytechnic diploma courses every year,” he said.

The education department thus plans to review the situation by 3 June, after which it would take a decision.

Normally, the strength of students is restricted to 50 which, he said, may be increased by five more in each division.

Though existing 318 divisions which could accommodate actually 1590 students with five more in each division, Parrikar said the ground reality sometimes demands more divisions, depending on who gets admission in which stream and which area.

“In that case, we will allow to open more divisions”, said Parrikar.
