X-XII exams together, new academic Yr from end-Mar
GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 10 May 2013 22:17 IST

Examinations of Std X and XII may be held together in the first fortnight of March and academic year may start before summer vacation, if proposals of educational fraternity are accepted by the government.
The Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education has proposed to hold both the examinations together, between 1 to 18 March every year.
The educationists have also agreed to follow central board pattern of starting the following academic year soon after examination and then take a break for summer vacation.
In view of this, other internal examinations from Std V to IX as well as Std XI would be then held in the last week of February.
There was almost unanimity on such important proposals when the educational fraternity met today in the state capital, at the initiative of education department.
It was attended by officials of Goa Board, Headmasters’ Association, Higher Secondary Principals’ Forum, Teachers’ Association and other educationists.
“We will soon prepare a comprehensive report based on the proposals and submit it to the government”, additional education director Anil Powar told goanews.com.
This important step was being taken based on the recommendation of National University for Education, Planning and Administration that Goa does not complete minimum 195 instructional days.
“With our proposal, the schools would now get 220 instructional days”, said J R Rebello, chairman of the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education.
The Goa Board has in fact suggested that examinations of both Std X and XII be conducted on alternate days, with the whole teaching staff of both the streams used for supervision rather than using non-teaching staff.
Goa also plans to follow the central board pattern by starting the following academic year in March itself, by last week of the month, with a little break after examination.
“This period could be used for annual sports and cultural activities before breaking for summer vacation”, said Rebello.
The proposal is to start the new academic year from end-March and go for summer vacation from 26 April, as usual.
The Goa Board has also reportedly proposed to reduce the Diwali vacation by one week.
“With this whole exercise, we get almost 35 days more for instructional purpose”, states Rebello.
Most of the stakeholders have reportedly agreed to these proposals since it would increase the number of teaching days while students could also enjoy the festivals.
The examinations are thus proposed after Mahashivratri and before Holi.
