Life sentence for Kokre; who killed for Life Insurance

Janardan Kokre, who killed a mentally unsound person and burnt him down with his jeep two years ago, was sentenced to rigorous life imprisonment by Margao sessions court today.
Kokre had killed Dilip Naik - his vilager of Mayem, beheaded him, chopped his hands and then burnt him down in Kokre’s own jeep.
The motive behind the murder was to create an impression that Kokre had died and his wife would get death benefits of total 19 life insurance policies he had made in his name.
While the incident took place on 10 April 2011 at Mollem, a human skull found on 6 May 2011 at Kone, Priol in Ponda taluka matched DNA of the body found in the jeep at Mollem.
Knowing that Dilip was of unsound mind, Kokre took him for a round on his motorcycle and then shifted him to his own jeep and moved him to many places.
He then parked the jeep by the roadside at Kone, Priol in Ponda, killed him, beheaded him, cut both his legs and hands and threw away Dilip’s head in the bushes.
He then rode all the way to Mollem and put his own jeep on fire along with Dilip’s body, to give an impression that Kokre had died.
The investigations also established that Kokre had duped one Mayekar family from Moira of Rs 12 lakh with a promise to give their daughter a lady PSI’s job.
He was thus in a hurry to declare himself dead and get rid of the Mayekar family.
Kokre is presently suffering from CD syndrome and was brought to the court on a stretcher.
The order was pronounced by Margao sessions judge Nutan Sardesai.
