12 centres to train students in football

The Goa Football Development Council wants to open total 12 training centres by next year to develop local football talent from student level.
Sports minister Ramesh Tawadkar told the Assembly today that around 640 students are already getting football training at five different centres in Goa today.
As members criticized the government for sidelining Goa Football Association from the GFDC, chief minister Manohar Parrikar assured to give more representation to the GFA, if required.
Both Parrikar and Tawadkar however denied the allegation of opposition members that the GFDC is a parallel created to GFA with political motives.
Independent MLA Benjamin Silva, also the GFA executive member, felt that GFA members are being sidelined in the GFDC.
Dr Rufino Monteiro is the chairman of the GFDC while Antonio Bothello is the vice chairman.
The members include GFA chairman Srinivas Dempo, ace footballer Brahmanand Shankhawalkar, Savio Messias, Agnelo Fonseca, Jovito Lopes, Liberata Mascarenhas and Shantaram Naik.
Elvis Gomes is the member secretary.
Issues were raised during discussion by Vijay Sardesai, Aleixo Reginald Lourenco and Vishwajeet Rane.
Parrikar said the GFDC is much different from the GFA, mainly doing work like a sports academy, providing basic training throughout the year to the students in order to develop them as good footballers.
The GFA, he said, is a body of recognized football clubs, which organizes games and cannot go beyond its membership.
Some of these clubs import even foreigners as their players and play as ‘Goan’ footballers.
“But we want to develop Goan boys as footballers by imparting them grassroot training”, said Parrikar.
Adding to this, Tawadkar said the centres conduct year-long camps for the students by providing them coaches.
He provided the list of students getting training at the five centres as follows:
Valpoi – 221 students, Aldona – 116, Sulcorna – 116, Benaulim – 116 and Navelim – 72.
He also appealed to the members to come with proposals and the government would provide funds to the GFDC to open more such centres.
