Parents don't bother about child's "education"

“Goan parents are not concerned about education, but only qualification, of their children.”

“Parents think that the school that gives more homework is a good school.”

“Education is making people unemployable.“

These are not mere statements but a deep concern expressed by Goa’s education minister – chief minister Manohar Parrikar.

In short, in tune with several educationists, Parrikar described today’s education less fruitful and more mark-oriented.

“I cannot understand when parents come and tell me to frame curriculum at pre-primary level. Pre-primary should be actually a fun school – learn while play”, he said.

He came down heavily on the attitude of parents, who are not at all bothered about imparting value education to their children.

“They want good marks and more home work; not good values and more knowledge”, said Parrikar.

In fact he narrated a story of a Gandhian teacher, who made students work, sweep and even clean up toilets on 2 October – Gandhi Jayanti – to teach Gandhian values.

Next day parents, along with some panchas, came to the school, asking why their children were made to work.

When the teacher told them Gandhi believed in each one doing his own work of any kind, a panch quipped – let that Gandhi do all this work, we will pay him how much he wants!!!

He also criticized the teaching community, who is not following the new Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) system.

He expressed regrets that the teachers look at CCE as passing the student without any efforts, till Std VIII.

“In that case, let children sit at home and come to the school directly in Std IX. We will also save on teachers’ salaries”, he commented sarcastically.

In fact he warned once again that he would stop grants of those schools that do not complete 220 hours of teaching.

He also warned of not giving grants to those schools, which do not give admission to the neighbouring students but give preference to ‘outside’ students.

“I will make it compulsory to have at least 75 per cent students from the neighbourhood”, said Parrikar.

He also supported the suggestion of opposition leader Pratapsing Rane’s demand of a full-day school – 10 am to 5 pm.

“But let me first begin with 220 hours and then think of a full-day school”, he said.

However, in the final analysis, he felt that education should not be such which makes the youth unemployable – meaning the youth has no education to do something independently but gives up the traditional occupation because of so called education.

Would your daughter or female relative, marry a Toilet cleaner ,in Goa ?

This is the reason I had to ask you those simple questions

to rouse your mind and mind you, you have not answered them all. If you can please answer them one by one.

Do not suppress freedom of expression however one can do constructive criticism.

My rather simple answer to all your rather silly & mad questions is "YES,YES, YES & YES".

I hope that will now allow you some sound sleep tonight.

Just to advise you...I live in my own home and clean my own toilets as it is hygienic . I hope you do the same in your home???. It is highly recommended/advisable.

On earth I just need Love & fresh air.

And In the UK , I just sit down all day and write comments on Goa News.

It's sad that the Head of the State has been forced to acknowledge the bitter truth of our commodified system..

The process of imparting INFORMATION and filtering into KNOWLEDGE and then using the same as WISDOM for one’s livelihood is losing the battle to COMMERCIALISATION and NEO-IMPERIALISM..

Alarms are ringing high to put a restraint to the loss of value based education system..

We need to believe in dignity of labour. No job is small job.

Education is more important than qualifications.

Children need to be taught values of life and our 'sanskars' like respecting elders, taking care of their old etc..

Quite a "RICH" comment, coming from you considering or contemplating ,you are in the UK too.

And what are you doing may I ask?....Supervising the Toilet cleaners??

Would you work for £ 50 ( Rs4000/=)a month cleaning toilets in Goa or £ 800-£1000/= (Rs 64000-£80,000) in the UK.

Have you seen the Toilets at Dabolim Airport.? And are these toilets ( with your eyes open) exactly the same ?

Are toilet cleaners in Goa, given any form of Mechanised or appropriate tools and safety clothing?.

Would you have similar Health & Safety rules in Goa?

Does the Post ,of Toilet cleaner, give you any "Dignity of Labour in Goa? Are you aware of the Social Taboos associated with it?.

Would your daughter or female relative, marry a Toilet cleaner ,in Goa?

Have you considered trying out Toilet cleaning in Goa yourself, before you write this ill-researched piece?

We Goans like to clean toilets outside Goa but not in Goa since we employ ghantis to do that dirty Job/s.

Visit London Heathrow and see for yourself first hand...
