Goan farmers will grow vegetables: BJP on entry tax

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has taken a stand that the state government would encourage local farmers to grow more vegetables if Karnataka and Maharashtra stops supplying it in protest of imposition of entry tax.
BJP spokespersons Dr. Pramod Sawant claimed that the strike of Belgaum and Kolhapur truckers and trader won’t affect Goa.
At a press conference held in Bicholim today evening, Sawant alleged that traders of Karnataka and Maharashtra have simply exaggerated the issue of entry tax by making baseless statements.
While defending the decision of the government to impose entry tax for vehicles entering Goa, Dr Sawant said the outside vehicles in fact fill their tanks while going back since petrol is cheaper by Rs 11 and diesel is also much cheaper.
According to him, the state government has invested almost Rs five crore on the infrastructure of entry tax while it would earn Rs 50 crore annually.
“This amount would ultimately be utilised to build infrastructure for the tourists coming to Goa”, he said.
Zilla Panchayat member Shilpa Naik said the entry tax cannot effect price hike as the vegetable per kilogram would cost hardly 10 paise more as one truck can carry six to eight tonnes of vegetables while it would pay only Rs 1000 as entry tax.
“If Karnataka and Maharashtra decides to stop vegetable supply, then we will encourage our Goan farmers to grow more vegetables”, she said.

The Party workers and advisers cutting across Party lines would do a great Patriotic Job if they join hands to work in the fields to grow vegetables and other agricultural products...It would encourage other white collar people too to go for it...Infact if agriculture is made compulsory for at least 2 years for all the graduates/diploma holders, passing out every years--it could help in raising the respect for actual working hands....
