Helmet-less ride was for public awareness: Benjamin

The Goa Assembly today heard yet another justification – to create public awareness – the nine legislators came for the session on their fancy two- wheelers without wearing helmets.
Benjamin Silva, the Velim MLA, rose during Zero Hour today and claimed: “Some of us, including fisheries minister Avertano Furtado and Rohan Khaunte decided to come on bikes without helmets to create public awareness.”
Nine MLAs including a minister coming to the Assembly on last Friday on their fancy bikes without wearing helmets had become a major controversy.
Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida, one of the BJP MLAs, had in fact been riding his bullet which did not have a number plate.
BJP legislators Avertano, Carlos and Glenn Ticlo as well as GVP chief Mickky Pacheco and Porvorim independent MLA Rohan Khaunte had come on their bikes, riding on the national highway, to the Assembly without helmet.
As it became a public issue, Benjamin during Zero Hour, referred to the discussion in the House on the concern expressed by several members on two-wheeler riders not wearing helmet.
“Even our opposition leader Pratapsing Rane had demanded on Wednesday strict implementation of the Motor Vehicles Act”, he recalled.
In view of this, said Benjamin, some of them discussed the concern and decided make the public aware by coming on bikes, but without helmets.
As the House including the Press Gallery was stunned with this statement, chief minister Manohar Parrikar instantly rose up and asked:
“Were you riding the bike? Then why are you justifying when you were not part of them?”
The five bikers also had four pillions, except on Rohan’s bike – Pramod Sawant, Michael Lobo and Nilesh Cabral – all BJP and independent from Bicholim - Naresh Sawal.
