No STD I-II-II students in 130 schools, Max Marathi

The state of government primary schools is pathetic in Goa with at least 50 schools running without a single student in Standard I while almost over 60 schools running without having a single student also in STD II and III.

In fact there is one school at Vazangal in Shiroda (Ponda taluka) that is running with one single student in STD IV and not a single student in rest of the three standards.

Half of the total 268 government primary schools are running with less than 10 students – with a single digit ‘strength’.

This information is supplied by chief minister Manohar Parrikar in the Assembly.

There are five schools with only 2 students, whereas four schools with only 3 students and 12 schools with only 4 students.

At least 50 of these schools do not have a single student in Standard I.

Similarly, 34 schools have no student in STD II and 32 without any student in STD III. 18 schools have no student in STD IV.

Majority of these schools are Marathi medium - over 91 per cent – or 246 to be precise.

Though number of Marathi primary schools is highest in Goa, the number of students is literally negligible here.

Next to Marathi are 18 Konkani medium schools, which are having less than 15 students.

Comparatively, only two schools each in Urdu and Kannada medium and only one Telugu medium school have less than 15 students.  

Maximum number of such schools is in Sanguem taluka (including today’s Dharbandora taluka) with 44 schools.

The lowest number of such schools is in Mormugao taluka, having only nine schools with a strength of less than 15 students.

Chief minister Manohar Parrikar says he is now planning to amalgamate the neighbouring schools, only after considering the geographical factors.

He has also announced a plan of minimum two government primary teachers for each school, rather than running it with only one teacher.

This may lead to some schools having one student and two teachers.

The reasons for low number of strength in these schools, as envisaged by Parrikar, are follows:

-          Quality of education in Govt primary schools is far from satisfactory

-          A wrong feeling that educational standard in city-based English medium schools is much better

-          Family planning has reduced the number of children

-          Parents go to cities to work and drop their children in city schools on the way
