Marathi Rajbhasha Andolan has claimed that almost 30 MLAs in the 40-member House have supported their demand to make Marathi also Goa’s official language.
According to spokesperson Adv Ajitsing Rane, even MLAs like Babush and Jennifer Monseratte from the Congress and Michael Lobo from the BJP have supported the cause of Marathi.
“Almost all the BJP MLAs except chief minister Manohar Parrikar are with us”, claimed Rane.
The MRA is now planning to start state-wide public meetings, beginning with Ponda on Saturday, 6 April at Shree Ram Hall, Warkhand.
Pradip Ghadi Amonkar, the chief convenor of the MRA, said they have gathered support of almost 30 MLAs including five from the Congress, two independents and all the three MGP MLAs.
The Congressmen, says Amonkar, include Pratapsing and Vishwajeet Rane, Monseratte couple as well as Cumbarjua MLA Pandurang Madkaikar.
The independent MLAs supporting the cause are Naresh Sawal from Bicholim and Rohan Khaunte from Porvorim, he added.
Though they refused to disclose names of the BJP MLA, Rane said Parrikar has been the major obstacle in taking the cause ahead.
“He does not even give us appointment to hear our demand”, complained Rane.
The MRA however still hopes that St Andre MLA Vishnu Wagh and independent MLA Sawal would be allowed to present the bill to make Marathi the official language in the ongoing Assembly session.
They are expecting a crowd of around 1000 for Ponda meeting, after which they plan to cover every village to gather public opinion.
The press conference was also attended by North convenor Ashok Naik and South convenor Mhalu Naik.
