GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 02 April 2013 19:03 IST

Goa government has decided to arrest theft and pilferage of water up to 56 MLD within a year and provide 24x7 water supply within next three years.
PWD minister Sudin Dhawalikar today told the Assembly that his department has taken up on priority to control the water leakage, which is almost 37.5 per cent.
“We will bring it down by 10 per cent within one year”, he said.
According to Dhawalikar, bringing down total water leakage has been an impossible task worldwide.
He said Japan is the only country in the world which has brought it down to only five per cent.
Otherwise, it is above 15 per cent in many countries.
Dhawalikar said he has set up special teams at all three major water treatment plants of Selaulim, Opa and Assnora to bring it down to 20 per cent.
According to the PWD minister, all the plants in Goa have been generating more water than the installation capacity.
“Our installation capacity is 464 MLD but the supply is 538 MLD, supplying 74 MLD more”, Dhawalikar told the House.
The requirement of rural Goa is 100 MLD while urban areas require water supply of 150 MLD.
The industry and hotels require 100 MLD while houses require up to 175 MLD, he said.
Intervening to reply to queries raised by Dabolim MLA Mauvin Godinho, chief minister Manohar Parrikar said Mormugao taluka would start getting regular water supply by 15 May.
Dhawalikar also informed the House that the department has taken up works at 12 different places to enhance the water supply, by spending total Rs 695 crore.
In addition, he said the JICA projects in eight different places would also help talukas of Mormugao, Salcete, Quepem and Sanguem talukas.
Almost Rs 570 crore would be spent on it, he said.
