Chidren perform as Gade in Bicholim

While Shigmo ended in parts of Goa with the night of Holi yesterday, Bicholim taluka is in the midst of Shigmo with Gadyancho Utsav being celebrated in different villages.

The Shigmo would end in this taluka on the day of Padvo, by second week of April.

The Gadyancho Utsav would then be followed by Homkund, Ghodemoddnni, Natyamahotsav and Virabhadra.

It all began from Falguni Chaturdas with Bordem village performing Gadyancho Utsav on Monday midnight.

“It is a belief that with Gadyancho Utsav, the entire village remains free from the fear of Ghosts as the God Wadawailo and Goddess Mahamaya control the evil spirit and prohibit them from creating terror” says Sunil Pal from Bordem.

"It is also mandatory that the Dhol (large traditional drum), accompanied with “Naman” (prayer) would be played uninterruptedly as otherwise the Gade might not regain their conscious" tells Tukaram Pal, another villager from Bordem.

The Gadyancho Utsav at Pilgao however attracts major crowd since it is celebrated in a broad daylight.

The Gade bring ‘Masan’ (remains of the dead persons) from the crematorium once they believably get possessed with Godly spirit.

Gade run over bodies

“People even from neighbouring villages throng to watch this festivity”, says former ZP member   Jaidev Prabhugaonkar.

There is yet another festivity, called Rakhanyanche Gade, performed by children, on the night of Holi Punav. The children however are not possessed with Godly spirit.

This was celebrated today.

The Sal village would also celebrate Gadyancho Utsav from 27 to 29 March while Karapur village would celebrate it on 28 March.

Kudne village already celebrated it from 24 to 26 March.

On the other hand, Holi Punav was celebrated in the Bicholim town with devotees performing Pooja’ (worship) of Holi at the hands of Brahmin priests.

“The belief that this Pooja protects the whole village from bad evils”, says Satish Mashelkar, a businessman from Sonar Peth in Bicholim.
