Give grants to all mediums, don't discriminate: NCP

The Nationalist Congress Party has demanded that salary grants to be given to all the private primary schools, including those running the English medium.
NCP’s local spokesperson Trajano D’Mello has criticized chief minister Manohar Parrikar for discriminating between Church-run private primary schools and other private schools run in English medium.
While students of 130 Church-run English medium are enjoying free education, D’Mello asked why students of the rest of 144 unaided private primary schools are being deprived of it.
“The new Right to Education Act provides for free and compulsory education, then why should over 27,000 students pay hefty fees to get education”, he asked.
He agrees that the 144 unaided private primary schools had given an undertaking that they would not demand salary grants. But the situation has changed after RTE has come into force, says D’Mello.
He also pointed out that the state government has permitted almost 45 new private primary schools in regional languages but 26 applications for English medium schools have been rejected.
“This not inclusive but exclusive democracy, almost equivalent to Salazar regime in the name of Manohar Parrikar government”, alleged the NCP chief spokesperson.
D’Mello however could not tell the media on what grounds the government has rejected the 26 applications and whether they fall within one kilometer of an existing primary school.
He also did not agree that withdrawing grants to the Church-run English medium schools is the solution if the government wants to promote and support schools run only in regional languages.
“We want grants to all the mediums and choice should be left to the parents, not the government”, said D’Mello.
