While the trend favours primary education in English medium, Ponda taluka tops the list of opening private primary schools in regional languages, especially Marathi.

In a written reply to Vishnu Wagh’s question, chief minister Manohar Parrikar has informed that the education department has permitted to open altogether 31 private primary schools from the next academic year.

22 schools among them are in Marathi medium, only eight in Konkani medium and one in Urdu.

Not a single school has opened in Sattari, Dharbandora and Quepem talukas.

The information reveals that Ponda has opened total 10 Marathi medium schools and one in Konkani.

It includes four in Shiroda constituency, three in Madkai, two in Priol and one in Ponda constituency.

Ponda has also opened one Konkani medium school.

The second taluka on the list is Bardez, having opened six Marathi medium private primary schools.

While Bicholim and Pedne have two Marathi schools each, one school each has been opened in Mormugao and Sanguem talukas.

Among Konkani, Mormugao is the only taluka having opened two Konkani medium schools – one in Mormugao and another in Cortalim constituency.

Other five talukas – Ponda, Bicholim, Tiswadi, Salcete and Canacona – have opened one Konkani schools each.

The Urdu school is opened in Mormugao taluka.

Mormugao taluka, interestingly, is the only taluka having opened private primary schools in all the three languages – two in Konkani and one each in Marathi and Urdu.
