Cong MLAs in the Assembly well
Led by opposition leader Pratapsing Rane and other opposition MLAs, all 16 corporators today paraded themselves before Governor Bharat Vir Wanchoo, demanding appropriate action on postponement of Mayor’s election of City Corporation of Panaji.
All the 16 corporators, led by Surendra Furtado, who was tipped to be the new Mayor, in a signed memorandum urged the Governor to intervene and ensure smooth conduct of Mayoral elections.
The memorandum also alleged that the undemocratic and illegal act by Commissioner was under the influence of chief minister Manohar Parrikar, who is also the Panaji MLA.
The act is directed to ensure that the democratic institutions envisaged under 74th amendment are throttled, stated the memorandum.
The corporators’ delegation was assisted by all the Congress MLAs, except Mauvin Godinho, as well as Fatorda MLA Vijay Sardesai.
Later, addressing a press conference, Congress spokesperson Aleixo Reginald Lourenco challenged Parrikar to conduct elections and win, if he has guts to do so.
