Almost after a decade or more, students have once again taken to streets to fight their exploitation by bus operators, especially by not giving them their rightful 50 per cent bus concession.

Calling themselves Goa University Students’ Council, they started blocking the bus movement from Ponda yesterday.

Today, after they paralysed Kadamba bus stand in Margao for around 45 minutes, the police intervened and detained 10 striking students.

Gaurang Panondikar, president of the GUSC, said the symbolic protest was to highlight the harassment meted out to the student community all over Goa.

Besides not giving them 50 per cent bus concession, Panondikar said they were not allowed to board the bus, made to stand in the bus and were even harassed in the bus by bus drivers and conductors.

Bus drivers however ask how they could run their buses in profit if it is full with majority of students.

They however denied that students were denied entry in the buses and were harassed.

“Bus drivers however ask how they could run their buses in profit if it is full with majority of students” Which one is first 50% concession or their bus introduction ? 50% concession was introduced 35 years ago and Bus operators are fully aware of this rule while starting the business. Hence they cannot blame the rule or students. If cannot run or unprofitable, close the business. Even 50% as full ticket is not worth considering the condition of pvt buses.

In recent years or decades there has been a dearth of fresh social leaders in Goa. The same old faces were having field day, not improving or getting fresh ideas. There was no challenge thrown to clumsy, rusted mindsets with same old views and perceptions. May be this concession move infuse new blood
