Parrikar demands 'central' package for mining rehab

With Supreme Court banning total mining activity in Goa for unknown period, Goa government has suddenly turned its guns towards the centre, asking for financial package.

Till yesterday, chief minister Manohar Parrikar was claiming confidently that the state is capable of taking care of rehabilitation package for those affected due to stopping of mining activity.

In fact after Supreme Court imposed total ban on mining activity including transporation and export of extracted iron ore, Parrikar claimed that the Supreme Court has reiterated the same policy adopted by his government.

However, Parrikar now feels that the funds for this rehabilitation should come from the centre rather than state bearing it.

To justify his demand, he refers to the revenue on mining, major chunk of which goes to the centre compared to the state.

Goa, last year, earned Rs 900 crore towards royalty while the central earned Rs 4000 crore from central taxes and foreign exchange by exporting 43 million tonnes of iron ore.

A similar demand was today also echoed by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.

Party spokesperson Dr Wilfred Mesquita said the financial package should be worked out by the central government at least to the weaker section affected due to stopping of mining.

“The package should compensate the affected till the legal mining resumes”, he demanded.

episode. Now he is trying to open file of South SP.

He acquired foreign passport then what is his position past and now from where is getting money.

that bag you are holding in the photo...will be a little to small for getting any relief from the Centre.!!

Like the Goa Congress -wallas, specially Churchill Alemao and Babush Monseratte (Family Raj Election Tickets)...you should go to New Delhi with more than a dozen suitcases to collect the relief.

Why you need support from Central Govt. Arrest all the mine owners involved in illegal mining and recover from them Rs.35, 000 crores. This money could be used to rehabilitate those people affected due to closing of illegal mines. Mr. Parrikar why you are slow in arresting Digambar and Rane ?

Mr. Parrikar is right in demanding the central package for rehabbing the mining ban affected Goans. It is the central Gonernment who has been availing the major benefits from the ore exports from Goa. The larger chunk of Rs. 4000 crores goes to centre and Goa gets a pittance of Rs.900 crores? Such a huge difference in sharing revenue from mining? This is sure looting Goa for its prized resources by central Government. And it has been going for years now. There must be an end to this.

Goans have been taken for a ride by few Goan families in collusion with politicians projecting that mining is a must for Goan economy. That is not. Earlier the Goans realise this plot, the better. No mining should be allowed in Goa and the present Government must Stop mining in toto. . Why should we allow mining to continue for pittance at the destruction of our motherland?It should be stopped only by closing all the mines. This is another strong reason why mining should be banned completely in Goa.
