Mid Day Meal scheme to be improvised
GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 31 July 2012 12:41 IST

Education department is exploring a much more viable alternative to mid-day meal scheme for quality food that students would like.
The deadline set is by November, soon after Diwali vacation.
Chief minister Manohar Parrikar, in the Assembly, fully agreed that more than half of the mid-day meal is being thrown out due to sub-standard quality, especially rice.
Parrikar thus said the department is exploring four different alternatives.
He is not sure of the first option to bring in Akshaypatra scheme implemented by Hare Rama Hare Krishna in almost four states, providing excellent food to students, since this organization does not exist in Goa.
The department is thus thinking of handing over the scheme to the Parents’ Teachers’ Associations, with more funds if required, to manage their mid-day meal through contractors.
If not, he said, the department may put up a fully hygienic and well-equipped community kitchen and the women’s self-help groups will have to cook in these kitchens.
Parrikar said also there is a fourth proposal under consideration to otherwise provide flavoured milk by branded companies as well as multi-grade biscuits having required calories and proteins.
The requirement set by the government is 500 calories for primary students and 700 calories for upper primary students.
Replying to the query raised by Sanguem MLA Subhash Phaldesai, the chief minister said the rates decided by the department are Rs 3.83 for primary and Rs 3.32 for upper primary.
Phaldesai pointed out that the food is bound to be sub-standard at such low rate. He thus demanded that the rates be increased.
