Stern action against teachers involved in sexual abuse

The government plans to take away teach from teaching if a prime facie evidence indicates that he or she is involved in sexual abuse of students.

The crime record of the candidate would also be verified henceforth before appointing any teacher.

Chief minister Manohar Parrikar disclosed his plans during a discussion on issue raised by opposition leader Pratapsing Rane.

A girl from a Panaji school, who was raped by a teacher last year, tried to commit suicide by getting herself burnt when the arrested teacher was released by the high court.

The victim, who is struggling for life in the GMC hospital, has told the investigating authorities that she took this extreme step since the rapist teacher was out from the jail.

The incident had occurred in January this year while the high court released the accused, Kanhaiya Naik, on 11 July.

Parrikar has also appealed to the parents to come directly to him with a complaint if any such attempt of sexual abuse on the part of the teacher comes to their notice, while assuring them not to disclose their name to anybody.

“I will not tolerate such kind of pervert activities in the educational institutions. Such people don’t deserve to the teachers”, said the chief minister.

He also plans to introduce a system where institutes would be compelled to verify criminal records or activities of the candidates before they are appointed.

Parrikar however also feels that parents should keep a watch on behavioral pattern of their children in view of such incidents taking places in schools and colleges.

He also promptly agreed to Rane’s suggestion to start counseling in the school, on rotation basis, by providing professional counselors to the pool of schools.

Rane also suggested installing CCTVs in the institutes to keep a watch on the teachers as well as people visiting the institutes.

Meanwhile, Parrikar assured the House that the government would move the high court once again to get the bail of Kanhaiya cancelled.

"I will also find out whether there was a lapse on the part of the police due to which he was granted bail", said Parrikar.
