Rains disrupt normal life in Goa

Incessant rains in Goa in the last two days have hit normal life in the coastal state with flooding on roads in main cities, disrupting traffic and fire and emergency department is busy attending to disaster calls.
A senior official from the department said they have attended more than 100 calls during the last two days.
On Sunday, there were 63 calls from different parts of the state, which was attended by fire and emergency services.
Majority of these calls were related to the uprooting of trees and house collapses.
There was a flood like situation in some parts of the state and situation is expected to worsen, if rains continue for next 24 hours as huge traffic jams were witnessed on roads across the state.
The Indian Meteorological department Goa incharge K V Singh said the total seasonal rainfall has touched 15.9 inches.
Quepem taluka, which is one of the rural areas, received 4.6 inches of rain on Sunday.
The traffic jam was witnessed throughout the day on the highway. Corporation of city of Panaji Mayor Vaidehi Naik was seen inspecting the situation as rain water flooded few city schools.
The IMD has predicted that rains will continue lashing the state for next 24 hours.
People have been advised to remain away from the sea as the waves are violent due to the monsoon season.
One person, who was angling (fishing) at Betul village, 50 kms away from here, died when a coconut tree came crashing down on him.
