Goa Police have stepped up security around Goa Medical College and Hospital after a notorious criminal, known for audacious jail escapes, was admitted there for attempting suicide inside the judicial lock up.
Several police jeeps are stationed outside the hospital where Michael Fernandes, a hardened criminal on crime radar of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Goa, is being treated for failed suicide bid.
Police are wary because Michael has a history of slipping out from hospitals where he is brought for regular check-up or treatment after he claims to have fallen sick.
"We have kept abundant security because this could be his ploy to escape," Deputy Superintendent of Police Bousset Silva told reporters.
Michael was in a judicial lock up after being arrested for mugging a couple in neighbouring Porvorim locality.
The criminal after escaping from Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour (IPHB), a hospital treating psychological disorders, had robbed a couple with the help of his accomplice.
Police escorts who had gone to take Michael to court for hearing on further remand on Wednesday morning found him unconscious.
The initial suspicions are that he might have tried to take his life by consuming tablets or may have faked it to plan his escape.
Silva said that Michael was initially rushed to Mapusa Hospital from where he was shifted to GMC, where he is currently undergoing treatment.
Police are now questioning his cell inmates to verify the origin of the tablets. "We want to know how tablets reached Michael," the officer added.
