Cong criticises petrol price reduction after 1 month

PTI, PANAJI | 15 May 2012 20:38 IST

A month after Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar slashed the prices of petrol in the state, the opposition Congress today criticised the decision.

"Congress is not against abolition of VAT, but it should have been reduced on diesel so that it would have had cyclic impact on prices of commodities," Congress spokesman Jitendra Deshprabhu said here.

Parrikar's government had involved itself in "a mindless act" by reducing the petrol prices as this was encouraging the black-marketing of petrol in the neighbouring states, he said.

The BJP-led government reduced the petrol prices -- as per its election promise -- by Rs 11 in April by abolishing the VAT.

It is expected to cost the state exchequer Rs 130 crore annually.

Deshprabhu said the government should have abolished the tax on the essential commodities.

He also questioned state government's circular banning the carrying of petrol in metallic containers.

"There are equipment like grass-cutters or water pumps, which farmers need, and which run on petrol. One cannot take them to the fuel station. How will the farmers use these machines if there is a ban on carrying petrol in cans?"

Deshprabhu said that Parrikar was trying to get publicity throughout the country by reducing the petrol prices.
