MoI case disposed as petitioner 'supports' Govt
GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 30 April 2012 20:31 IST

The high court has finally disposed off the petition relating to controversial issue of medium of instruction.
The petitioner today agreed to withdraw its petition following assurance by the Goa government to withdraw the objectionable circular giving grants to English medium primary schools.
The Bombay high court at Panaji had withheld its verdict on the issue while the Education Director Anil Powar had filed an affidavit before the court in this regard.
The erstwhile Congress government led by former chief minister Digambar Kamat had at its cabinet meeting held on 25 May last year had decided to give grants also to English medium primary schools.
Accordingly, a circular in this regard was issued by the education department on 10 June.
Later, the high court had withheld the circular while the state-wide agitation against the decision had put the Kamat government in a quandary.
While the BJP swept the Assembly poll held on 3 March, the Congress had admitted that its decision on MoI was one of the prime reasons for its miserable defeat.
The BJP, on the other hand, had assured an amicable solution on the issue while upholding the universal principle that primary education should be imparted only in the mother tongue.
Petitioner’s counsel Adv Mahesh Sonak today told the court that they would not mind withdrawing the petition since the government in its affidavit had agreed to withdraw the circular.
The education department has also assured the court to issue a new circular in this regard.
