New Govt also hesitates to act against Diocesan schools

In spite of change of guard in Assembly election, the new government is also hesitating to act against the Church-run schools for contempt of court.
The education department has succeeded in getting the probable action postponed till 21 May, on the issue of changing the medium of instruction from Konkani to English.
One of the prime reasons the education department cited to the court that sudden action against 105 schools may have a serious social implication.
These schools had shifted its medium of instruction to English while the high court had stayed the government decision to give grants to English medium primary schools.
The decision of 105 schools run by the Church-run Diocesan Society of Education was challenged in the high court, while pointing out the contempt action initiated by the DSE.
The DSE authorities had also admitted that its schools have shifted to English medium at primary level.
The technical reasons cited by the education department however are the ongoing examinations as well as case-to-case inquiry into the case of shifting the medium of instruction.
The education department thus asked time of eight weeks to submit a report to the court in this regard.
The high court has thus granted time till 21 May to the education department.
