M F Hussain film screened at IFFI

GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 30 November 2011 18:39 IST

Defying the protest made by right wing Hindu organisation, the IFFI Secretariat today screened legendary painter M F Husain's documentary `Through the Eyes of Painter', amidst heavy security.

Previous screening of the film was postponed due to Hindu Janjagruti Samiti objecting to the screening, claiming that the screening of the film was sub-judice.

Unlike this time,  two years ago the IFFI organisers had cancelled the screening following similar threats.

However, IFFI Director Shankar Mohan this time decided only to postpone the screening in orde to varify the legal objection cited by the protestors.

The HJS threat of gathering in a large number at the screening venue proved to be a hoax as nobody turned up at Kala Academy when it was screened at Kala Academy today evening.

Superintendent of Police (Security) Tony Fernandes said "everyone except delegates entering the premises was frisked as security agencies didn't want to take any chance."

The postponement of the film had received angry protests from the delegates with some of them staging a dharna at Inox last week.

Director Mohan had then assured them to go ahead with the screening if there are no legal hurdles.

As an artist, he has got the license to paint any thing that comes in his mind, because this is a democracy, doesn’t matter if he paint some God or Goddesses in Porn style, it’s an art isn’t it?

I am glad the MF Husain movie was screened. Art and science are human expressions which should be respected, since it is these expressions that help us to live like humans progressing to enlightened state
