Chovoth to be 'utilised' for MoI awareness

Bharatiya Bhasha Suraksha Manch (BBSM) today said that the forthcoming Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations is a good platform to create awareness on the issue of Medium of Instruction (MOI).
BBSM Convenor Shashikala Kakodkar told mediapersons said that 100-odd sarvajanik (public) Ganeshotsav mandals in the state will be asked to hold the entertainment programmes to educate people on the issue.
The ten-day Ganesh festival will be celebrated from September 1.
BBSM has been opposing the inclusion of English as MOI, which according to them, would kill local languages. Kakodkar said, "Various organisations celebrating this on a mass scale, will put up exhibitions depicting the state government's anti-people policy of imposing English on our children."
"The public celebrations would be used to lodge protest against the government. If we eliminate Konkani and Marathi from our elementary education, then we will be losing our culture," BBSM leader Subhash Velinkar said.
In a similar protest, BBSM has decided to distribute two lakh rakhis on the day of Raksha bandhan day, which would be celebrated on August 13.
"Rakhsha bandhan symbolises brother's love for his sister. Brother pledges to save his sister from the evils.
We want to adopt this concept to protect our mother-tongue," Kakodkar, former Goa chief minister, said.
BBSM has been holding state wide protests demanding that Goa government should withdraw its decision of including English as the MOI.

Government should give the grants to all the languages equally. It has to be the parents decision what they want their children to learn and where they want to see them.
