Goa BJP today supported Konkani and Marathi as the medium of instruction (MOI), opposing the move to "thrust" English in elementary education.
Addressing a press conference today, Goa BJP chief Laxmikant Parsekar said Congress legislators were trying to politicise the issue for electoral gain.
"They are playing with the future of our children. Its not the legislators but experts who should decide on such crucial issues," he said.
Parsekar said BJP supports the argument that primary education should be in the mother tongue.
"The concept of education in mother tongue is accepted worldwide even in developed countries like China and Japan," he pointed out.
"We are not against grants for the schools teaching primary education in English but as far as MOI is concerned, it should be only in the local languages," he said.
The MOI issue has attained centre stage in Goa with a section of parents supporting English, while a front led by educationists, parents and freedom fighters have said that Konkani and Marathi should be MOI.
The controversy surfaced as the state government geared up to implement the Right To Education Act, which makes it mandatory for elementary education to be in mother-tongue.
Congress legislators, including Education Minister Atanasio Monserrate, had participated in the rally, held recently, favouring English as MOI.
Parsekar alleged that Congress was indulging in a conspiracy to finish educational system in Goa by introducing English as MOI.
