Heritage activist cries against antique smuggling

The mysterious disappearance of a hero stone dating back to 13th century from a remote village in Goa has raised concerns about antique smuggling in the state with activists demanding government intervention.
Heritage activist Prajal Sakhardande today said antique smugglers are eyeing the state's ancient and medieval treasures which are lying unattended and unnotified at various places.
"Antique smugglers are behind the theft of hero stone (`viragal') from Nagve village in Sattari taluka.
The Goa government's inability to notify such important monuments are giving a free hand to these anti social elements," Sakhardande told reporters here.
The hero stone, missing since September 14, had a battle scene inscribed on it and the lower portion had funeral pyre with Hero's body shown along with his wife who was about to jump into the pyre.
There is an organised antique smuggling racket in Goa which needs to be busted, Sakhardande said.
"If no action is taken by the government in tracing the culprits involved in the theft, it will set a precedent and send a wrong signal. All unnotified sculptures and other antiquities are in grave danger of being lost and it is time for the government to act and preserve this treasure", he added.
