Raju & Chennama in Bondla zoo

A pair of sloth bear has been added to state’s Bondla zoo in Goa, forest officers said today.

The sloth bears were procured from Hyderbad's Nehru Zoological Park. It would be given pair of bisons from Goa zoo, under exchange programme.

Bondla zoo, tucked in wildlife sanctuary, had a single slot bear for the last six years. This was against the guidelines of Central Zoo Authority (CZA).

"CZA makes it mandatory that no single animal or animal of single sex should be kept in the zoo," a senior forest department officer stated.

After 30 hours road journey from Hyderabad, the pair was welcomed in Goa zoo. It would be kept in quarantine for three weeks before putting it for display in the enclosure, officer stated.

"We will be exchanging a pair of bisons soon," the officer stated.

Forest department has named the sloth bear pair as Raju and Chennama. The pair would be companion to existing single slot bear, Meena.
