PI & 4 policemen suspended in drug nexus

PTI, PANAJI | 05 March 2010 16:18 IST

Goa Police today suspended one police inspector and four lower rank policemen for their alleged links with two Israeli drug-peddlers.

Briefing the  media, Chief Minister Digambar Kamat stated that Police Inspector Ashish Shirodkar, Head Constable Hussain Sheikh and constables Sandip Parab, Sayeesh Pokle and Sanjay Parab were suspended for their alleged association with the drug peddlers.

The action came after media expose unearthed lethal police-drug peddler nexus. In a hurriedly called press conference at his residence this afternoon, Kamat announced the suspensions in the presence of Home Minister Ravi Naik, Director General of Police Bhimsen Bassi and Superintendent of Police (ANC) Veenu Bansal.

Kamat said that the the link was exposed through a video tape and interrogation of drug dealer David Griham, A video tape posted on YouTube had also shown another peddler Atala (full name not known) bragging of his friendship with Inspector Shirodkar.

"We relied upon the information provided by arrested drug dealer David and the contents of video on the website," the chief minister said.

He said all the suspended policemen were earlier attached to state's Anti Narcotic Cell, a special branch conceived to weed out the narcotic menace in the coastal state.

"Crime Branch will inquire into the links," the chief minister said.

Replying to a question, Kamat said that if necessary the action under narcotics drugs and psychotropic substances act (NDPS) would be initiated against the accused policemen.

The state police was shocked after a video footage was aired by a local channel, Prudent Media, showing confession by an Israeli national.

The drug-peddler, who was earlier arrested by ANC, was seen as claiming that inspector Shirodkar was stealing drugs from the court custody and selling it back to the peddlers.

Well, suspensions get revoked easily. With pomp, the peon was arrested with certificates and unaccounted cash from the office of civil registrar, panaji. RED HANDED. But the same peon is continuing the job freely again there. The only difference is that he is not accepting cash inside the office. Anyway, rates have increased now.... because he has also greased some palms to continue.... ha.. ha... This is a state of Tiatr, characters change, but the show goes on..... Congratulations... and bravo.... loot us, plunder in millions, and then say to mi nu

Mrs Shirodkar, You are lucky.

Best advice for you is ask for a divorce and say you knew nothing about this racket.

You will have trouble if you are in Question about your hubby's earnings and spendings. Better RUN away.

Take my advice.

It is good that some action is being taken. But it has to be ensured that only the guilty is punished . The action should not stop just by punishing the small fish. The real culprits if any behind the curtains have to be exposed and brought to book!

Hon. Chief Minister Mr. Digamber Kamat has taken a right decision by suspending the concerned police officers in the drugs case of the Israeli. It is a real shame that educated people in Goa can go up to this extent to make money. Betraying the oath taken during the passing out ceremony and later breaking the same oath deserves double the punishment if there is any. It is a real shame to the whole Police Department. Such fellows should be dismissed straight away and not suspended. They should be publicly stripped of their uniform in a public parade. It is real disgusting to read such stories. These incidents would not have occurred if during the employment the free Government posts were given freely without taking bribes in lacs from the candidates based on their merits only. SHAME ON YOU GOVERNMENT OF GOA for creating such situations in the first place - Menino (Valpoi)
