Mickky's GVP supports BJP

Days after announcing its candidates, regional political outfit Goa Vikas Party (GVP) extended its support to BJP candidates, to consolidate votes against the Congress which has fielded a tainted candidate from the North Goa constituency.

GVP supremo Mickky Pacheco told reporters here that the party chose to back BJP candidates to teach a lesson to the Congress which has fielded Ravi Naik as its North Goa candidate.

"Naik has been indicted by a House Committee for links with drug peddlers," said Pacheco, who headed the committee, whose report has not yet been adopted by the Goa legislative assembly.

GVP general secretary Lyndon Monteiro said that the House Committee report said that Naik ran the drug trade in collusion with certain police officers and drug peddlers.

"Last year, the Pacheco-led committee had submitted a House Committee report which had indicted Naik, his son and several police officers of being involved in the drug trade.

Responding to a question, Pacheco said that the Goa government would soon adopt the House Committee report.

"We are in constant touch with the Goa chief minister who has assured us that the report would be adopted," he said.

Monteiro claimed that report has already been referred to the Goa home ministry for its comments, after which action would be taken in the matter.
