Sanjay Bandekar

Sanjay Bandekar, former minister and three-time MLA of Canacona, died of brain haemorrhage today afternoon, after struggling for life for 18 days.

His final rites would take place at his Agonda residence in Canacona at 12 noon.

He was 59. His admirers had planned to celebrate his 60th birthday on 10th August.

Bandekar is also the father –in-law of Karnataka’s fisheries minister and Karwar MLA Anand Asnotikar.

An electricity department lineman-turned politician, Bandekar had entered politics as a staunch worker of Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party, after he worked for few years in the Gulf and returned in late ‘80s.

Being known for his firebrand image, Bandekar entered the Goa Assembly for the first time in 1990 as the MGP legislator.

However, he played active role in toppling the Congress government led by Pratapsing Rane within 75 days.

Seven Congressmen split from the party to form a coalition government with the MGP in March 1990.

He then once again accompanied Ravi Naik in January 1991 to split the MGP and join the Congress to form yet another alternative government.

In both the governments, he served as the minister. Later, he was disqualified along with another colleague Ratnakar Chopdekar.

As a first ever minister of Canacona taluka, Bandekar handled several ministries like sports, art and culture, fisheries, river navigation etc.

He then joined the Congress while toppling the PDF government and also successfully contested 1994 and 1999 elections as the Congress MLA.

He once again defected from the party in October 2000 along with other Congressmen, to join the BJP.

He served in the erstwhile Manohar Parrikar government as the information minister for two years.

However, due to a public protest voiced out against Parrikar’s decision to prematurely dissolve the Assembly in 2002, Bandekar was dropped from the cabinet in April 2002.

He then joined back the Congress and also contested elections. But he could never win the seat again.

Recently, in the last Assembly election, he had publicly expressed his unhappiness over the Congress functioning and had joined the BJP, to campaign for Canacona MLA and sports minister Ramesh Tawadkar.

However, on 8 May, he was found in his Agonda house in a fainted condition and was immediately shifted to Apollo Victor Hospital in Margao due to brain haemorrhage.

He was then operated and was struggling for life. He breathed his last today afternoon.

He is survived by his wife Savita, son Gauresh, one daughter Gauri married to Asnotikar and another daughter Gauravi.

Besides being active and  social and poltical arena, Bandekar was also ardent lover of drama and music and was very much fond of chanting Bhajan.

Chief minister Manohar Parrikar has condoled the sad demise of Bandekar.

In his condolene message, Parrikar has said Bandekar was a great social worker who was always concerned about the poor and the needy.

A man that kept on changing his Political affilations & loyalty, for his personal benefits, must be viewed as a 1st Class Traitor.

Imagine a war with Pakistan or China. It tseems like Mr Bandekar, would change sides at "the drop of a hat".... & money, going by his Journey through life.

His soul has been purged from EARTH and now awaits justice from GOD.

He was a very good person who always run to help poor people. He personally visit to meet ill people and so many times give his own vehicle to drop patient to hospital. He was a real social worker. We must not speak anything bad after his death. May his soul rest in peace.

Goans will not miss this cameleon. Once notorious and know for smuggling along with Chorchill Alemao. News reporter must have been his friend to put him in high pedestal. He was a disgrace to Goa & Goans. Of course forgiveness granted to him. May his soul rest in peace. I would like the future generations of Goans to know the real history of Goa.
