GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 22 July 2016 21:40 IST

It is almost certain that Goa Assembly election would be held by mid-January.
Local office of Election Commission of India has confirmed that they are getting geared up to hold election by the second week of January.
Returning after holding meetings with the election commissioners, Goa joint chief electoral officer Narayan Navati told goanews.com that the local office is getting prepared to hold election any time after December.
The term of Goa Assembly however ends by first week of March.
“The actual dates of election would however be announced by the Election Commission of India”, said Navati.
It is learnt that ECI plans to hold elections of five states in one go, beginning with Goa, Punjab and Manipur.
The next would be Uttarakhand in two phases and then Uttar Pradesh in four phases.
The first notification of elections in three states including Goa is expected by December end.
Though Navati expressed ignorance over the exact dates, he said the cleansing of electoral roll would be completed by September while checking of electronic voting machines would be completed by November.
Goa will have around 10 lakh voters this time to elect the new Assembly of 40 members.
