Govt to burn down canoe that extracts sand illegally

Goa government has officially warned of burning down the canoe carrying out sand extraction illegally and debar the whole family from the activity for five years.
While Goa’s mines department has started issuing permits for sand extraction in the zones identified after obtaining environmental clearance, it has issued a notice issuing instructions in this regard.
The 7 instructions issued in this regard are as follows:
1) Sand extraction activities within the state of Goa, shall be carried out only under an extraction permit granted by the department.
2) All canoes used by such sand extraction shall invariably be fitted with GPS devices latest by 3rd April2016.
3) All canoes and other material used for sand extraction by any extractor other than permit holder shall be confiscated. by the department after 01 /04/2016.
4) The department also reserves right to destroy any such canoe used for illegal sand extraction with the cooperation of other departments such measures include burning or otherwise disposal of canoe at site as a deterrent to such illegal activity apart from imposition of exorbitant fines.
5) All illegal sand extractors including their family members shall be permanently debarred from grant of sand extraction licence for five years and in case of repeated offences, criminal prosecution shall be initiated against such persons.
6) It shall be presumed that canoe holder is also responsible for such illegal sand extraction activity, irrespective of the fact that whether he was involved in such activity directly or otherwise.
7) No sand extraction activity shall be carried out between 6 pm to 6 am.
