Not North Goa, treat garbage of only 5 villages: Saligao residents
GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 21 October 2015 17:27 IST

Saligao residents have opposed the government move to treat the garbage of whole North Goa at the upcoming garbage treatment plant at Saligao plateau.
The villagers have threatened to come on the roads when almost 80 per cent work of the plant is complete.
And they have a reason to oppose.
“The capacity of the plant is to treat not more than 180 tonnes of garbage, in three shifts round the clock while the garbage dumped every day is around 650 tonnes”, says Austin da Gama, attorney of the Saligao Communidade.
According to them, former CM and today’s defence minister Manohar Parrikar had assured the plant to serve five coastal villages and not the whole of North Goa.
The five villages of Reis de Magos, Saligao, Calangute, Candolim and Parra create 150 tonnes of garbage every day.
The rest of North Goa, on the other hand, creates garbage of around 500 tonnes every day.
The authorities have already dumped around 50,000 tonnes of garbage on the Saligao plateau, where the plant is being built.
“The earlier assurance is to treat 60 tonnes from the dump and the daily garbage of 150 tonnes, which we were comfortable with”, said da Gama.
Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar had last week visited the plant, stating that it would be commissioned shortly to take care of the garbage of the whole district.
“But we don’t want this plant if the garbage of the whole district is dumped here when the plant has no capacity to treat it”, said Saligao Sarpanch Eknath Oraskar, at a press conference today.
Oraskar, otherwise known to be close to local Saligao MLA and tourism minister Dilip Parulekar, has also demanded explanation in this regard from Parulekar as well as Calangute MLA Michael Lobo, both belonging to the ruling BJP.
He also points out that authorities have done nothing till date to build two roads to the plateau, to carry the garbage.
Obviously, they said, the final resort would be to come on the roads if the people’s representatives don’t prohibit the government from dumping the garbage of whole North Goa at Saligao plateau.
